Our Gold Star: The Clubhouse

aparentingproductionMy friend and neighbor, Erin, is starting a simple little link up. I had gotten out of link ups lately because I didn’t want the pressure but I am digging Erin’s idea. We all have moments in our week where we say “Hey…I did something awesome. I deserve a gold star”. Like that time I left my company lunch to pump in my car while driving to Christmas shop. Gold star. Or that time I was 39 weeks pregnant and carried my 30 pound toddler on a walk and then a poop in the woods because I couldn’t waddle home fast enough. Gold star. So her link up is simple…give yourself that gold star and have that moment to look back on.

This week’s gold star comes from that sprint at the end of the day to get every one fed, bathed and put to bed. At our house, that is about 2.5 hours from the time we walk in the door. Monday afternoon this also included a baby who had been up since 2:30 and already whiny. We walk in the door and Landon immediately wants to build a clubhouse (couch fort for most of us). We need to get dinner ready and sheets washed from the accident the night before. Divide and conquer. Daddy starts the grill and the laundry, baby in exersaucer with every teether I can find and I set out to make a “clubhouse” complete with all the blankets his majesty requests.

The minute I am done “THANK YOU MOMMY! IT’S BEAUTIFUL.”

He crawls inside his “tiny space” and immediately comes back out.

“Mommy. Can Ollie come in my clubhouse?”

I am tired but realize the sweetness of this moment and haul the baby into the fort to precariously lean between pillows.

“Mommy. You can leave now. It’s just for us.”

ANNNND cue swoon. They hung out for a few minutes until

“Um mommy, I think Ollie is going to tear it down”

Sure enough, grabby hands was all pulling the roof down. But it was then I realized that me taking those little moments for them to bond is worth the late dinner and the running around at bedtime. They are building something great. So Gold Star to me AND Kevin for pulling off another evening of chaos that hopefully makes great playmates in the future.

Great job! I invented a boat game for nights like this… giant blanket slung in between my legs makes a great boat. Plus I have to keep my feet propped up on the coffee table for it to work. 🙂
