Things I Love – Craft A Day

craftFirst thing, let’s make sure we are clear. I DO NOT do a craft a day. That is just laughable. I can barely feed myself in the evenings much less make a craft. I can say, if I REALLY tried, I bet I could do this. But I have box wine to drink and South Park episodes to reminisce over…so suck it, crafts.

All that said, I love crafts(I didn’t mean those hurtful words above. Besties?). I love Pinterest and the feeling of a project accomplished. Like crib bumper cornice boards, teacher gifts and paper flowers::cough cough::. But kids? They are craft blockers. My weekends are a giant cycle of nap routine and entertaining the other. It’s exhausting. No way I could recover my dining room chairs with the all-appealing staple gun while Sir Topham Hatt is all up in my face. Anyway, for Christmas, Kevin got me Craft-A-Day by Sarah Goldschadt. 365 crafts. It sounds daunting but if you step away from the “do a craft everyday” and look at it as a simple craft depot, it ROCKS.

The crafts are SUPER easy. You only need a few things. Each week has a theme. Snowflake, foxes, eggs, leaves, etc. The first page is a template of the shapes. Usually a few sizes of the same design. Then throughout the week, you have different projects. Finger puppets, garland, cupcake toppers, barrettes. Any sewing is felt and embroidery thread (i.e. home ec level). You can do most in 30 minutes tops (without children at your feet). The most complex are the sewing ones…which I haven’t attempted yet. I have made a handful of things and really hope to make the garland for each “season”. Right now I have a snowflake one and it is just plain adorable.

But the big winner on the book is it’s kid friendly. One of the first pages is a grid showing you each week’s theme with a picture. I can hand the book to Landon and say “pick a picture you want”. A snowman, a bird, a gnome. Then we can trace the template on a color of paper. In most cases, I can have him color the image and I just it out for him. Simple. Sometimes I can whip together a quick one (like this charming robot)

robot craft a day  or we build by pieces to assemble over time (like this cute garland).snowflakes craft a day

I bought a giant ream of colored card stock a few years ago. It was a steep price at the time but SO WORTH IT. I have every color and great quality. I use it for all kinds of stuff. So if you need to buy anything for the book, buy some colored paper. So paper, scissors and a few crayons/markers/colored pencils will let you do a vast majority of the projects. No real mess. WIN.

At least once every weekend, I hear “Mommy can we do a craft?” and then my girly heart flutters. We are having fun, not watching TV, developing fine motor skills and I get a kick ass garland out of it. Child labor laws are silly and outdated.

So next time you are looking for a gift for your hipster crafty friend or need a book to pull ideas from on a rainy day? This is a sure winner. Easy. Cute and Afforable. Oh and there is no glitter involved…so no craft herpes.

While looking for photos of the book, I found this site with some great photos of the things you can make! And then an even better review with great photos I didn’t take time to take. Thanks, internet, for making me more lazy.
