Things I Love – Happy Jack Shampoo

happy jack no itchOur pup, Jack, has skin allergies. The poor thing just has points in the year where his skin is super dry and he licks himself constantly. Then? He smells. Back after Landon was born, he actually got stressed out on top of this allergy and was pretty pitiful. He dropped 10 lbs and was constantly scratching. We had numerous tests run with no positives coming back. The vet deemed it seasonal allergies and allowed us to just come get steroids when it flared up so bad to help him out. We tried other types of meds to help the immune system but nothing helped that much and they cost a fortune. He can go on the steroids for a dose period and seem to be fine. We have resigned ourselves to just dealing with it every winter and summer as it comes.

Now the tricky part is bathing. We know we shouldn’t bath him too much because it dries him out but if we don’t, all the licked bare skin (he has very little hair on his belly because of breed) smells like ASS. Also, when the dryness kicks up, the flaky skin is EVERYWHERE. So for years we have been trying to find the right shampoo. Something help the itching, not dry him out more and not smell like ass (some of the Rx ones are just gross). Note: We also give him fish oil on his food and it makes a HUGE difference in the scaly skin.

Then we found Happy Jack Itch No More Shampoo at a local general store. Game. Changer.

First off, it isn’t like any other dog shampoo. Heck reading the ingredients made me wonder how it was even a shampoo. Sulfur? Tar? Seemed so strange but holy moly does it work. It seems very soothing to his skin and not using a drying like most soaps. I even enjoy they have coined the term “Itchamacallits” for general itchy behavior. It also has a medicinal scent…very earthy. I personally like this because it seems to overpower the gross. Mission accomplished.

The only cons are finding it and the initial sticker shock. We first were getting it at the general store but then they stopped carrying this specific one. We are now ordering through Southern States. The bottles cost around $12 for 12 oz. So yeah…it’s expensive. We actually ordered enough to get free shipping so we spent over $60 on dog shampoo one day…OY! But once we thought about it, the cheapest bath at the vet/groomer is still more expensive than a bottle. We can get about 2 baths out of 1 bottle (we coat him pretty well). $6 bath is a pretty good deal.

Happy Jack also makes a lot of other products for specialty problems like fleas, ticks, mange, worms, ears and skin issues. I haven’t tried them out but I imagine they are pretty good. Check them out if your dog has any special needs. I am sure they have something for it.

The Happy Jack company knows nothing of me. I just really love this product and wanted to share for other dog moms out there 🙂

I’m going to point out the obvious and say how cool is it that Happy Jack shampoo makes your Jack happy! Even more cool is they have a product for sore foot pads. Our pointer goes backpacking with us and she refuses to wear booties. Sometimes we can’t help the condition of the trail and sometimes her feet take a beating. She LOVES backpacking and being outside with us so not taking her is not an option. We were using burts bees wax to seal her pads and carried second skin spray if her skin broke open. The Pad Kote may work better since it promotes healing instead of just sealing. Thanks for the tip.

I have a young border collie with very dry skin. I found Happy Jack Itch No More shampoo at the local feed store for about $8.00 today. This is an amazing product. Immediately after her bath she was like a totally different dog. She’s now running and playing without stopping every few seconds to scratch. Awesome.
