Another Post About Birth Control {with GIFs!}

WARNING: More talk of lady stuff. Men? I suggest you look elsewhere. If your lady is in the market for birth control options, just forward the link. But if you want something to read, here is a post about Percy in a different context.

The Backstory (with pictures!)

It’s been almost a year since the beginning of the Mirena saga {Part 1} and {Part 2}. If you want to read about intimate details of my lady parts, go on ahead. The pictures are the best part!

The Backstory (Cliffs notes version)

I got my Mirena IUD put in in January. About a month later, I went to the doctor for a common issue related to IUD insertion and she couldn’t find my strings. That led me to get an ultrasound where the IUD wasn’t seen. That night I went to the hospital and got an x ray. The IUD had perforated my uterus and was living as a hobo in my abdominal cavity. I was in no pain but immediately looked into having it removed. I then had laparoscopic surgery to have it removed and all was well. The end.

How That Played Out

So all that healed up just fine. I have one teeny scar from it on my hip. It really just looks like a mole. For a crappy set of circumstances, I faired pretty damn well. I would also like to note that my amazeballs insurance payed for all of it. I roughly estimate around $15,000 in total from cost of IUD to surgery. YUUUUUUUP. All that cash for no guarantee of no baby. UNACCEPTABLE.

so-mad-i-could

We still are happy with the 2 rugrats. And after all that, LOTS of people have sent me messages asking what I was going to do in the birth control department. Right away? I had no idea. We went with good ole condoms and by good ole I mean

marilyn-monroe-yuck-

I really didn’t want pills but eventually I went on Loestrin. This was the birth control I was on for years before Landon. I figured it was a start to see how I felt. I was on it for 3 weeks and I had uncontrollable rage. I was on vacation and I wanted to murder everyone. It felt unnatural so I stopped taking them immediately and things got better. Phew. So my body was not liking one of the lowest forms of estrogen. FANTASTIC!

So I went back to my dr and we talked. Many people had recommended Nuvaring and it actually had a smidge less estrogen. It was worth a shot and we could always reassess again if needed. I liked the idea of not taking (and/or forgetting) something everyday and the less estrogen just helped seal the deal.

Nuvaring: My New Favorite

So I waited until I had good data to report on before I brought it up over here. I have been on Nuvaring for about 6 months now and I LOVE IT. I get a box of 3 every 3 months and it is just swell. I have reoccurring appointments on my calendar to remove and replace every 5th week. I remove the thing, have a short period, and replace the next week. No panic of forgetting and remembering the “can I take 2 at once or what?” math. It is easy to put in and take out. I don’t feel a thing. I also don’t have any usual birth control side effects like rage, headaches, night sweats, etc. So let’s get the facts out:

Pros: Once a month, localized hormone distribution (some reports claim this is how you get less) and NO BABIES.

Cons: Some husbands can feel it. I polled around about this and it seems about 50/50 on if it bothered them. It definitely isn’t the IUD string poke effect. Just like “oh hey, something is there”. Many women have just taken it out for sex. It’s really that easy. You could do it without him noticing. Promise.

Unexpected outcome: To get even MORE graphic on the “downtown area”, using the ring made me more open to trying the Diva Cup. don’t know what that is? My BFF Brandee has a story for you over here. Last fall I ventured out and got one. She exclaimed it was a god send so I gave it a shot. HOLY SHIT BALLS PEOPLE! This is the greatest invention of all time. Not only am I not wasting money on chemical laced feminine products but I also have EASIER PERIODS. Now this COULD also be a side effect of the Nuvaring over time but I am thinking no. I don’t have the same overall feelings I have ALWAYS had on or off birth control. If you want to talk to me more about it, just contact me how ever or I can answer in the comments. Just suffice to say, it is a life changing little piece of silicone. DO IT.

do-it

So there we go. 1 year out from the Mirena saga and we finally have a solid solution. I am hoping this can help some of the thousands of women who have been googling about a lost IUD and got here. The stories pour in and I am glad to be here to shed a little positive light on a shitty experience. Being a woman is hard, y’all.

If you want to read more about birth control and the Affordable Care Act, this is a lovely piece.

So if you take it out for sex do you still have to use condoms?

No. It isn’t in there zapping sperm like Galactica. It’s just releasing hormones continuously. A blip isn’t going to change effectiveness. Unless you are having sex for hours…then…ouch.

I had the mirena for almost three years. And hated every second. Long story short, I bled for almost three straight years. Heavily the first year, and by the end, it was spotting. But every. single. day. for three straight years. Because of this and other side effects (none like the houdini act though) I just wanted it out but didn’t have another viable alternative (hormones are not nice to me). It was clearly effective for me – no babies. After a mini fit this fall, I had it removed. I looked into natural family planning and so far so good. I took a class from our local hospital and learned a great deal about how women’s bodies work. I feel pretty comfortable with my ability to pinpoint ovulation/fertility and on those days we use condoms. It has been four months and still no babies.

Have you read Taking Control Of Your Fertility?

I have not read that book yet, but it is in my Kindle. I will admit that we are at a point that it wouldn’t be a total disaster if we had #2. We are still planning on just one for now (he is a hard kid, yo) but I don’t feel as strongly about not being able to handle another one like I was a year ago. A year ago would have been a disaster and thus the reason for keeping the hated mirena. I am also extremely regular (I can pin to the time of day) which helps. I have also not yet become complacent about checking. Ask me again in a year how this is working out for me. 🙂

Hiiii! I hated my Mirena and had it removed after 1.5 years. Went back on BC pills after the kid-making hiatus, and was a total psycho with the rage. I thought I was weird for that, but so glad I’m not alone. I’m still on ol’ condoms bc I’ve been scared of hormones. Pushing gently for hubs to get the snip. I love the Diva cup too. Thanks for sharing your experience!!

I’m using the nuvaring since about 6 years now and love it too. I never got pregnant on it and when I took it out to get pregnant it only took 3 month to get pregnant. And… If you or your man feel it during sex, you can take it out for up to 3 hours, then rinse with warm water and re insert. The ring hurt me during sex so I always take it out.

MARRIAGE RESTORED! my husband asked to pack out of the house with my kids and go because he wasn’t interested in me anymore. He said all the abusive words and said am not a good wife because I wasn’t working, instead I was waisting his money so contacted this Strong Healer a week ago after reading Miracles about his spell over the net I consulted this strong man for a love spell, crying not knowing what to do. he told me that he will cast a return lover spell that same day. It didn’t take time for my husband to call me apologizing and begging me to come home. The tender that i was waiting for was approved and he started telling me that am a good wife so I must forgive him for the bad things he had said. My husband asked me to look for any University of my choice and will take care of my fees. Am thanking olunkunspelltemple@outlook.com, for the Faith and Trust he showed me.
