2 year old gifting guide

In the past few weeks, I have been asked about toys my kid likes.  Simple answer, anything new 🙂 But then the new wears off and something has to stick. Hell he has latched on to the Lightening McQueen we cut off the box of shredded wheat more than the Lightening McQueen we bought him…but I digress.  We get a ton of hand me downs in this house…so if it looks well loved when it comes in, it probably was a hit.  Since I have said this a few times lately, I thought I would just chronicle some of Landon’s (and mommy and daddy’s) favorite toys and why:

Giant Mr. Potato head – My mom bought this for me years ago.  I can’t remember why.  Landon didn’t exist.  It sat in the attic and then one day I found it and Landon has loved that thing from day 1.  At first it was fun for us to dress them up and play.  Then he enjoyed dumping the pieces. Then he learned to put the pieces in the holes.  Then he got them in the RIGHT holes. I can say that at 23 months, he can open, dump, pull apart and put together every single piece.  He knows the piece names.  He loves to play BY HIMSELF.  Which is a skill I thrive to teach my son (another topic for another day). And look, for only $90 you can even nerd out too .

Ikea Mala Easel – $15 for the easel and $5 for a roll of paper = hours of fun.  There is a chalkboard, a white board (we haven’t ventured to that), and then the paper.  It can fold up and be put away.  Weighs NOTHING. This will be useful for years to come.  Nothing fancy, just a great deal and toy. You NEED one.

Bath toys – We have found bath toys to be the best toys.  And not for bath.  Landon LOVES his Thomas bath squirters. Seriously.  The kid is NEVER without them.  They are a perfect size for him to carry.  No batteries. Soft for when he hurls them at your head. They float. They stack.  Hell they can even ride his REAL train. We also have the Yo Gabba Gabba squirters and they are just the same. They are a great price for a birthday party or quick gift. I can’t shout my love for them enough.

Small table – Kevin’s parents got LT a little table second hand at christmas.  I don’t know the brand but it is similar to the IKEA one. This is great.  He can have snack here. He can color. Fingerpaint. Have a tea party. Feed his stuffed animals. Run his trains across it. Mash play dough.  Really  a great item.

So that is just a few.  What are your kid’s must-haves? Well besides a Netflix subscription and popsicles….

  1. Yep…at IKEA, they had those easels displayed in every department I walked through. It was impossible to make it out of there without buying one. 🙂

  2. I have to agree with the giant Mr Potato head. My husband got the Star Wars one years ago as a gift from his sister, and it sat in our basement as just another nerdy thing he has. Now, our two year old boy plays with it on a daily basis. And of course, Daddy loves to join in the fun.
We were thinking of getting him an easel, I will for sure be going to Ikea for it now!
