That Time I Took A Year Off Blogging

I’d like to say that I took at year off to reflect on myself and my life. I’d like to say I took a year off to reevaluate what my life was all about and focus on my family.

But, lol, no. I’m just lazy…and busy.

I’d come here and stare at a blank box with nothing. I’d type a rough draft of something to look at it in a few days like “no one fucking cares what you have to say about that” and never open it again. Then I’d get busy writing for work and when I got home the last thing I wanted to do was look at another laptop screen. So let’s catch up, shall we…

Seriously, we had a year of good. I know no one wants to hear that with 2016 sucking balls so much in every other way but we did alright. We are happy, healthy and no one got shingles or pinworms or some weird eye disease!

What about Landon?

Landon started second grade with an amazing new teacher and has been doing great. They started some English instruction this year and, contrary to what he will tell you, he is doing really well reading in his native language. He loves all things math including making up word problems about things in everyday life just to remind us he knows it. ALL HAIL COMMON CORE. Landon started Taekwondo in February and has kicked ass at it. He has changed 5 belts and seems to enjoy excelling at a personal sport. We have found an amazing community in the studio near our house and love the new family we have there. In the Fall, we decided we weren’t busy enough apparently and added Cub Scouts to the mix. Our little Wolf has enjoyed camping, hiking, safety awareness and POPCORN SELLING (he hated that). Overall, he’s a pretty awesome kid being wonderfully 7 and we are having a lot of fun in big kid land.

And Ollie?

Speaking of big kids, Oliver is about to out run us. With turning 4 in July, he has happily shown us that he is just as old as his brother. He started quickly with his “graduate work” dominating the alphabet and I’m pretty sure he will be reading by Spring. Along with his “graduate” status, he is taking french at school and finds it fun to learn the words in Spanish when he gets home too. He can quote movies and TV shows with the same prowess as his parents and can deliver a joke in context so well it honestly scares me. He also started Taekwondo in November and is enjoying his new dragon belt status. He will start kindergarten in August and the boys can literally have another language to talk behind our backs :).

And the “grownups”?

As for the adults, we celebrated year 11 of marriage complete with a getaway to Savannah. We also saw another year at the greatest place to work (#2 in the world now). I’m still in my role in social media with a large project being completed in early 2017. Funny enough it is redesigning all our blogs…so i guess you could say I’m in the blogging mood :). My team is still amazing to work with and I am in love with the fact that I am with them every day and see their awesome up close. Kevin kicked off 2016 with a whole new group to manage. Bye bye Webex; hello VMWare. He enjoys his new life as Mr. Manager bringing home his banana stand money.

I finally got back into running with the help of a group of lovely ladies in my hood. I finally found the holy grail of having multiple people to get up at the ass crack of dawn to run. No excuses! With their help, I ran my second half marathon this fall with my new PR. I will probably do a couple more in 2017…and faster!

So while everyone talked about 2016 being a dumpster fire for everything else, we honestly had a happy little stable year. I’ve missed blogging and know that I will want to look back on these times when I can’t remember shit in a few years. So get ready, the word vomit is coming. Happy 2017!

I’ve read your blog here and there, reason being you are a more relatable blogger to me than those who claim to be “career bloggers” and that’s their job. We both have to put on our big girl pants and go to an office and communicate with other adults all day in real time. Anyhow, the ‘hood women’s running group thing, can you share more about how you organized it. I’ve had success with a neighborhood book club, but the running group thing seems to be on another level. I’m thinking 5am, too…that’s a rough sell.

I stumbled upon one person in my hood at a party that said she would get up. Then we slowly convinced other people. I started a grassroots FB group to begin with and added just runners i knew (for any time of day) and they added their friends. That’s how i got outside my bubble.

Thanks, Brandy. We have monthly neighborhood parties here and that would be a good place for me to test the waters with such a group.
